A timeline of McDonalds Big Mac prices through the decades clearly illustrates the state of the American economy.

Us every day people often measure the state of the worlds finances through the inflation of products we use every day. Its exactly why you can remember the price of a chocolate bar when you were a kid, compared to the price of the same chocolate bar now.

McDonalds knows there is an issue

Recently, furious customers have been flocking to social media to moan about the prices of fast food giant McDonalds. Because honestly, theyre atrocious.

$18 for Big Mac combo is beyond reason. McDonalds sales & stock price will continue to fall, one person scathed, as another added, I dont have the same issue with other fast food places. It only seems to be McDonalds that has reduced quality and severely increased prices.

McDonalds is fully aware of the issue and recently pledged to look at the affordability of their menu in 2024. McDonalds CEO Chris Kempczinski addressed the high prices on an earnings call with Wall Street analysts on February 5.

He said: I think what youre going to see as you head into 2024 is probably more attention to what I would describe as affordability. Eating at home has become more affordable. The battleground is certainly with that low-income consumer.

Not to rub salt in the wound, but you need only look at past Big Mac prices to understand just how bonkers the latest price hikes are.

1960s

Way back in 1967, twelve years after the franchise opened its first store, they released the now infamous Big Mac.

Two patties made from 100% beef, stacked on cheese, lettuce, onion and pickles, with our famous Big Mac sauce, they are described as.

You could chow down on the burger for (drum roll please) just 45 cents!

1970s

Just a few years later, customers at McDonalds could grab a Big Mac for 65 cents, milkshakes for 35 cents, and added cheese for 5 cents.

1980s

By the time Guns N’ Roses were headlining in stadiums across the world, McDonalds was marketing fully formed meals for what they described as a reasonable price. At the time, this was $2.59 for a Big Mac, fries, and coke.

1990s

Just ten years later, the price of a solitary Big Mac was the initial price for a full meal at $2.45. If you wanted a meal, youd have to shell out $4.59.

2000s

Just twenty years ago, customers could bag a hefty burger for as little as $2.39. Its not immediately clear what the price of a full meal would have been.

2010s

Ten years ago, the world seemingly underwent a financial shift. Finance experts might point to various factors, but all we care about is the fact a Big Mac shot up to $4.19.

Present day

While exact pricing is very much dependent on your location, the average price of a Big Mac in 2024 is $5.69, according to Statista.

While the price jump is undeniably outrageous, we should count ourselves lucky as Switzerland is currently selling them for over $8.
