95-year-old grandma says to take things one step at a time in uplifting life advice
A woman has shared a piece of uplifting life advice that her grandmother gave her in the hopes it will help somebody else too.
She had recently been struggling with her mental health, and the 95-year-old revealed how to get through the day one step at a time.

95-year-old grandma’s advice
When life gets a bit overwhelming, the 95-year-old said you need to break the day down into stages and do things step by step.
“Look at yourself in the mirror, wash your face, put your makeup on, put your clothes on and then say ‘What must I do next?'” she said. “I must have a little breakfast or I must have a cup of tea and then I will start to do this little thing that needs doing.”
In that moment, don’t worry about anything else. Once you’ve completed that task, you can then move on to the next thing. Taking things slow will make each thing feel easier and stop you from feeling so swamped.
Calm says breaking down big tasks into smaller, more manageable steps is a great way to make it feel less overwhelming. They also recommend being gentle with yourself, prioritizing sleep, making time for exercise and practising mindfulness.
Don’t forget to reward yourself
The grandmother then raised the importance of giving yourself a reward every now and again.
“When you’ve done that, you think I’m dressed, I’ve got some makeup on, I’ve done that task it’s taken me two or three hours, I need a cup of tea in the cafe,” she continued.
“I’ll go there and have it, that’s my reward and I deserve it. I deserve it because I’ve done those things and I take pride in the fact you’ve done them.”
She said not to worry about what happened years ago or what’s going to happen in the future, just focus on now and getting through the day stage by stage.
‘I needed this today’
The video has had more than two million views and is helping so many people on TikTok.
One person commented: “This made me cry… I needed this today. My goodness thats good advice.”
“Thats exactly how I got out of my depression. I took it step by step and eventually could handle a whole day’s worth of tasks then a week’s worth and now I’m focusing on my future,” said another.
A third added: “As a Psychiatric Nurse, she’s right, take it slow, hour by hour. Be compassionate on yourself and make small attainable goals.”
Remember this advice when life gets a little too overwhelming.
