9 iPhone security features to protect against theft
Santo Ludy, a technology expert at BecexTech has shared nine hidden features that will keep your iPhone safe if it’s ever stolen.
1. Disable saved passwords
Firstly, it’s a good idea to disable saved passwords. It might seem handy having all your passwords stored in your device, but it means thieves can access all your personal accounts. Switch it off by going to Settings > Passwords > Autofill Passwords >Toggle Off. Also, make sure you have strong passwords which aren’t easily guessable.

2. Disable lock screen notifications
If your Apple device gets taken, people will be able to see all the notifications that pop up on your lock screen such as text messages and financial data. To prevent unauthorised viewing, switch this off by going to Settings > Notifications. Then, choose which apps you want to display notifications.
3. Turn off wallet access on the lock screen
For the same reason, you should restrict wallet access on the lock screen too, so thieves are unable to see any bank notifications. Do this by navigating to Settings > Face ID & Passcode(orTouch ID & Passcode) > Disable ‘Wallet’ under ‘Allow Access When Locked’.
4. Erase data after failed login attempts
This feature automatically erases all data after 10 failed passcode attempts, giving you peace of mind that thieves won’t be able to access your personal information. Turn it on by going to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) > Enable ‘Erase Data’.
5. Disable USB accessories while locked
If your phone is stolen, someone could try and connect it to a computer to extract your data. However, they won’t be able to do that if you turn on this setting which prevents USB devices from connecting to your iPhone while its locked. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) > Turn off ‘USB Accessories’.

6. Shorten auto lock time
Most phones are stolen while the owner is using it, so the device is unlocked. Shortening the auto-lock time to 30 seconds means the phone will have locked by the time the thief has a chance to open it, limiting access. Do this in Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock.
7. Enable SIM PIN
SIM PIN is a great feature which means a passcode is needed to access the SIM card every time the device is restarted or the SIM is inserted into a new phone. Turn it on in Settings > Mobile > SIM PIN and then set a PIN for your SIM card.
8. Limit Control Center access on the lock screen
If you allow Control Center access on the lock screen, thieves can access more settings without unlocking such as turning on airplane mode. When your phone is on airplane mode, ‘Find My Phone’ is disabled so you won’t be able to track your stolen device. Turn it off in Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) > Allow Access When Locked > Disable ‘Control Center’.
9. Regularly review your trusted devices
Finally, it’s a good idea to regularly review your trusted devices and remove ones that no longer need access to your Apple ID. If an old iPhone is stolen in a home robbery, thieves will be able to access your data and reset passwords from the trusted device. Do this by going to Settings > [Your Name] > Devices.
You should also turn on Stolen Device Protection, which adds an extra layer of security when your iPhone is away from familiar locations.
