8 tips to extend your iPhone’s battery life according to former Apple employee

No matter how much phone companies claim that their new generation of battery will last much longer than their previous iteration, after a few years of use, that battery in your iPhone will no longer be working at optimum performance and will drain much faster than when it was new.

Thankfully, former Apple employee Tyler Morgan has dedicated his time to offering hints and advice through his TikTok account – which boasts more than 1.1 million followers – to help iPhone users get the most out of their phone, including eight essential tips on extending that all-important battery life.

Do not charge your iPhone battery to 100%

Letting your phone run out of juice completely before charging it fully can put strain on the battery. Instead, charge it to 80% and try to keep it within the 30-80% range. Apples iPhone features a setting called Optimized Battery Charging where it will learn your charging routine and not overcharge your device.

Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Turn on Optimized Battery Charging or set to 80% Limit.

Turn off background activity

This will stop apps running in the background while theyre not being used. It may stop notifications coming through from certain apps but it will save on battery.

Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Turn off or turn off for selected apps

Turn off location services for unused apps

This is a setting youre likely to want for apps such as maps, so turning it off completely wouldnt make sense. But there is little reason for an app like Voice Memos to be draining battery life by tracking your location.

Settings > Privacy and Security > Locations Services > Turn off for unused apps or set to While Using

Turn down brightness

Screen brightness can be one of the biggest factors in how quickly your iPhone battery will be used up. You can either set the brightness level yourself or set your phone to automatically select the most appropriate brightness level for the conditions youre in. For example, you dont need your brightness to be at maximum while scrolling Instagram in a dark bedroom.

Turn off Raise to Wake

This will stop your iPhone screen from turning on automatically when picking it up off a table for example, instead requiring you to actively tap the screen to wake it.

Settings > Display and Brightness > Turn off Raise to Wake

Turn off Hey Siri

Turning off this setting will stop your iPhone from actively listening for the words Siri or Hey Siri and save a huge amount of battery in the process.

Settings > Siri & Search > Listen for Siri or Hey Siri > Turn off

Turn off Bluetooth

If you dont connect your phone to Bluetooth devices all that often, turning off the setting can be a huge battery saver. Turning off Bluetooth in the Control Center pull-down menu will only do so temporarily, with it turning itself back on the next day.

Settings > Bluetooth > Turn off

Turn on Reduce Motion

Turning on this setting will reduce the strain on your iPhone and its battery but will remove the animation of apps jumping to fill the screen when opened or slotting themselves back into place when returning to the home screen. Instead, apps will open with a simple fade animation.

Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Turn on Reduce Motion
