73-year-old couple’s biggest mistake in life will encourage you to book that trip

As we go through life, it can be really useful to listen to the older generation to avoid making the same mistakes they did.

Older people have the most life experience and their biggest regrets can help those who are younger live their lives to the fullest.

73-year-old couple’s ‘biggest mistake’

One couple in their 70s was stopped in New York by YouTuber Sprouht, who interviews random members of the public and asks them to share a piece of life advice.

“If you could give one piece of advice to someone younger then you, what would you say?” he asked – and the woman instantly knew what to say.

“We both love to travel and I think we waited until we thought ‘Oh we can afford that’,” she said. “It would have been much more fun to travel when we were younger.”

She explained that they didn’t start travelling until they were about 50 years old as they feared not being able to afford it.

Finances would have been tight, so they decided not to travel at all, but wish they had taken the plunge and stayed at “less nice places” to save money. They love the fancy holidays and nice hotels they are able to stay at now, but would have loved to go backpacking in their youth.

Seeing the world can make you a more well-rounded person, educating you about other cultures while bringing a greater understanding of people. It also allows you to make memories that you will look back on and tell people in later life.

How to deal with money anxiety

However, their advice also spreads a far larger message about not stressing about finances in every aspect of your life. Money anxiety affects lots of people and the persistent worry about being able to afford things can affect your mental and physical health.

It is really important to keep control of your finances, not be too frivolous with your spending and save for your future, but there are things you can do to stop worrying about money and start living your life to the fullest.

Calm recommends setting clear, achievable objectives that you can work towards, including both short and long-term goals. If there’s a country you’ve always wanted to visit or you want to buy a house one day, write them down and work towards them.

To help you save, it’s a great idea to track where your money goes, make budgets and control your spending. Schedule money check-ins to regularly review your financial situation and consult a financial advisor if necessary.

When you do feel anxious about money, practice relaxing breathing exercises and meditation to calm your nerves and remember – don’t let making a living prevent you from making a life.
