7 of the most independent dog breeds, according to experts
While some dogs are glued to their owners 24/7, some are more independent and seek to spend more time alone.
Like their owners, every single dog is unique and comes with its own requirements, needs, and personality types. While some might find that their dog is super clingy, others will discover that their pooch likes to be left alone. All are valid, and all are equally as cute, but some breeds seem pre-loaded with independence.
Akita

Speaking to 10 animal experts, researchers at StudyFinds found that the Akita ranks on their list of most independent dog breeds.
Akita, one of the most popular pet breeds in Japan, is known to be fiercely protective and full of energy. Luckily, when they are not bouncing off the walls, they are quite happy chilling with themselves.
Shiba Inu

Another Japanese favorite, the Shiba Inu made its start as an independent hunting dog. While extremely capable and intelligent dogs, Shiba Inu can also be difficult to train.
They are quite happy to look after themselves, but experts have warned against leaving them alone for too long as they are known to get up to mischief.
Afghan Hound

Like the Shiba Inu, Afghan Hounds were used as hunting dogs in areas that often required no human supervision. As such, they are predisposed to alone time.
Experts also noted that while loving and compassionate, the Afghan Hound likes to show love in its own way. So, if they dont want cuddles, dont force it.
Basset Hound

The Basset Hound sticks out on this list of high-energy breeds as one that would rather not do anything at all. Seriously, he just wants to be left alone.
Because of their lack of motivation to do anything, Basset Hounds are known to put on weight fairly easily. That’s why, whether they like it or not, it’s important to drag them out for some time on the leash.
Basenji

Basenji, also known as the barkless dog, is a breed descended from great hunters. Their ancestors hailed from Africa, where they would be expected to hunt at great distances from their handlers.
Though Basenji dogs are very much content with filling their own time, they do like some high-energy workouts to burn off those pesky zoomies.
Chow Chow

This literal ball of fun and fur is as low-key as they are adorable. Chow Chows get easily stressed out if overstimulated, making them the perfect breed for chill time and Netflix.
While they do form loving bonds, experts warned that Chow Chows tend to fixate on one person in the family.
Alaskan Malamute

Training and maintaining a Malamute is undeniably hard work, but it pays off. Though they are completely chill while lying on the floor or outside, they also enjoy walks, workouts, and playtime.
You also dont have to worry about leaving them alone, as these resourceful dogs will keep themselves occupied until dinnertime.
