6surprisingbody partsthat are as unique to you as fingerprints
Everyone knows that your fingerprints are unique to you but, according to the results of a new study, so is the surface of your tongue.
There are over 8 billion people on the planet, yet each and every one of us is unique in our own special way. While weve long known that things like fingerprints and dental records can be used to identify us, a fascinating new study has found that no two tongues are alike.

Study finds that your tongue is as unique as fingerprints
The reason why your tongue has a rough texture is because its surface is made up of hundreds of tiny buds called papillae.
While these papillae help us to taste our food, talk, and swallow, scientists have now found that the pattern they create is unique to each of us – just like fingerprints.
This is from a new research paper published in Natures Scientific Reports journal by scientists from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Leeds.
The team trained an AI computer model to analyze over two thousand microscopic scans from 15 peoples tongues. Not only was the AI able to identify people from a single papillae, but every person sampled was found to have a unique papillae-surface pattern.
The researchers argue that this has enormous potential for discovering why our sense of taste differs from person to person, developing healthy food alternatives, and even diagnosing oral cancers earlier than traditional methods.
Co-author Professor Rik Sakar celebrated: Imagine being able to design personalized food customised to the conditions of specific people and vulnerable populations and thus ensure they can get proper nutrition whilst enjoying their food.
“We are now planning to use this technique combining AI with geometry and topology to identify micron-sized features in other biological surfaces. This can help in early detection and diagnosis of unusual growths in human tissues.”

Surprising parts of the body that are also unique to you
Fingerprints and tongue surfaces arent the only parts of your body that are unique to you; far from it.
In fact, there are a whole host of other fingerprints that can be used to identify you and only you, such as:
Iris DNA determines the color and structure of your iris, but its random patterns only develop when you are a fetus. Not only does this mean that your iris is unique to you, but even your two irises dont match each other perfectly.
Ear The curves and ridges of your ears are unique to you, with no one else in the world having the exact same shape or size theres even a concept to develop smartphones that can scan your ears as a way to unlock your phone.

Toes Just like with fingerprints, your toe prints develop when you are a fetus and dont change throughout your life. There was even a case in Scotland when a man was convicted of robbing a bakery after leaving a sole toe-print on the flour-covered floor.
Teeth A common method of identification in police investigations, your teeth not only contain your DNA, but their shape and size can also be used to pinpoint individual people.
Lips The elevations and depressions in your lips are also unique to you, with lip prints even being used in rare court cases to identify alleged criminals.
Outside of these factors, things like your voice, walking gait, and retina can also provide unique and interesting ways to identify you as you.

So, if you ever feel like you are just one of many, you can find comfort in knowing that your body is completely unique there isnt another you in the world.
