5 things you should never do to your skin, according to a dermatologist
A dermatologist has explained her top five things to never do to your skin, and no, the list does not include excessive tanning. But it should.
Skincare and makeup opinions are ever-evolving as the science behind healthy skin continues to develop and refine. That being said, there are hard nos that most people know, like how pore strips actually strip your nose of their natural protection. But now certified skin expert Dr Shereene Idriss has added her own five to the ever-growing list.
Cleanliness is close to godliness
Taking to TikTok in December, the New York City-based dermatologist told her 608k followers her golden five rules. The first might seem like common sense, but if she had to state it, its reasonable to assume that its a problem she runs into with clients.
“Number one, I would never use the same facial wash cloth two nights in a row, she explained with her own skin looking glowy. “I know it sounds excessive, but you don’t wash your face and then introduce a dirty underwear to wipe it off.”
She argued that using a washcloth twice is doing exactly that, and added: “Now, it does sound a little excessive, but it’s really not that bad or hard to do or expensive – you buy seven small little washcloths, I used to use them on my babies, and then you do your laundry once a week.
“And voil! You don’t have to think because if you’re doing it once a week and you have seven washcloths, boom, each time you wash your face, you have a clean washcloth.
Rule number two builds off the pore extraction strips that were mentioned above, but the doctor went one step further to rule out blackhead vacuums entirely.
She said: “Now imagine what kind of damage you can do with this crazy torture tool in your hands. Bottom line, that s**t is going to f**k up your skin.”
Skin is king, so protect it, says the dermatologist
We all know that we should be using UV protection every day, even in overcast climates. But while using sunscreen is important, you most definitely shouldnt be using out-of-date cream.
The doctor explained: “It’s expensive s**t and it’s supposed to protect your skin. Why the hell would you take a gamble on a product that’s probably been sitting by some window for, like, a year because, now, you remembered you’re gonna go to the beach and you’re gonna want to use it again?”

“Just go buy a new one and get the protection that you’re actually buying. And if you’re going to take the time, effort, energy and spend the money to do so make sure you’re using the right stuff that’s actually going to protect your skin.”
If youre a fan of the odd cosmetic procedure, then this next rule is for you. Instead of pumping Botox into your face constantly, the expert suggested waiting for movement to come back first.
“Why? Because you want your ethos to be alive. You want your personality to come through. You don’t want to be flaccid […] and look flat your whole life, she added.
Finally, Shereene argued that we should never be using a dedicated hydronic acid serum because it could actually inflame the skin and result in redness.
Dermatologist leaves followers confused

While most fans thanked the dermatologist in the comments, others were left with more questions than ever about their skin.
What the hell, everyone says to use hyaluronic acid and now you shouldnt Im so done, one person said.
