If you want a garden that’s blooming with colorful flowers during the spring, you need to put in the work now and get planting.
5 bulbs to plant now for spring
Craig Wilson, a gardening expert who founded Gardeners Dream, has shared five bulbs you should plant in the fall to see your backyard come to life next spring. All of them need to be planted from September to November, before the first hard frost, so that they have time to establish roots.
1. Daffodils

What says spring better than daffodils? The bright yellow flowers are the first sign of warmer days and add a stunning pop of color to any garden. Wilson says daffodil bulbs must be planted 10-15cm deep and 10cm apart in well-drained soil. Make sure you plant them in a location with full sun or partial shade and be careful not to overwater.

2. Snowdrops

Despite their wintery name, snowdrops are another stunning flower that blooms in the spring, lighting up the garden with their delicate, white bell-shaped petals. They must be planted in rich, well-drained soil 5cm deep and 5-10cm apart. Snowdrops will grow in partial to full shade and need watering well after planting.
3. Tulips

If you love a really colorful garden, tulips are the spring flower for you. They come in a range of vibrant shades from red to orange and pink and prefer light, well-drained soil and lots of sun. Plant them about 20cm deep and 10cm apart. Then, water well after planting, but ensure the soil stays on the drier side to prevent rot.
4. Crocuses

Crocuses are another early bloomer, brightening up your garden just as the winter ends. The gorgeous purple flowers with vivid orange centers should be planted around 5cm deep and spaced out 5-8cm apart. They need well-drained, moist soil and are happy in an area of the garden that gets full sun or partial shade.
5. Alliums

The final bulb you could plant this fall is alliums, perfect if you want a rarer spring bloom. The big purple beauties have striking, globe-shaped flowers that really add that wow factor to any garden. Bulbs should be planted in well-drained soil 10cm deep and 15cm. These beauties love full sun and don’t need much watering once established.
If you have a dog, always check which flowers are poisonous before planting them in your garden as many can be toxic to our furry friends.
