March is almost here which means one thing – spring cleaning! It’s time to declutter, tidy, clean and refresh before the new season, and a great place to start is by clearing out your wardrobe. However, it’s important to do it in an eco-friendly way.
A study in the PLOS One journal found that cleaning products are associated with many environmental problems, including contaminating bodies of water and negatively impacting wildlife. Plus, around 150 million tons of waste are sent to landfill every year.

Why eco-friendly spring cleaning is important
Anna, an expert at iWardrobes, says that spring cleaning should always be an eco-conscious event, and we should all “do our bit” for the planet.
“Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up; it’s a tradition that symbolises renewal and rejuvenation. It’s a chance to shake off the dust of winter and breathe new life into our homes. By decluttering, organising, and deep cleaning, we create space for positive energy and a fresh start,” she said.
However, engaging in an eco-friendly spring clean is an “important step in this annual tradition” as you can freshen up your living spaces for the season ahead while also helping the planet.
“By ditching harsh chemicals and opting for greener alternatives, we can reduce our environmental impact,” she added. “Plus, embracing eco-friendly practices during spring cleaning ensures that we’re preserving our natural resources and playing a role in combating climate change.”

5 eco-friendly ways to spring clean your wardrobe
Declutter Mindfully
The first thing you can do is take a mindful approach to decluttering. Instead of getting rid of things carelessly or keeping items you never wear, evaluate each item individually. Anything you don’t want, you can donate to local charities or sell on Vinted, Depop or eBay to “give your garments a new life”.
Embrace Natural Cleaning Products
Next up, make sure you’re using natural cleaning products that are not harmful to the environment. Swap out chemical-filled products for eco-friendly alternatives or use natural ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice, which are effective at cleaning and gentle on the environment.
Repair and Upcycle
Before throwing away clothes that are damaged, consider if they could be repaired or upcycled first. Learning some basic sewing skills will allow you to get creative and give your garments a “fresh lease on life” while also reducing waste.
Invest in Quality Pieces
Instead of buying cheap clothes that break easily and are then sent to landfill, prioritise quality over quantity and “invest in timeless, well-made garments that are designed to last”. Plus, look for sustainable materials such as organic cotton, linen, or recycled fibres.
Organise with Sustainability in Mind
Finally, you should always opt for sustainable storage solutions, like bamboo or recycled plastic hangers instead of traditional wire hangers. Use natural materials like cotton or canvas for storage bins and baskets too.
