5 best alternatives to your morning coffee as expert advises against immediate caffeine kick

People worldwide, for ages, have been using their morning dose of coffee to kick start their day, and the caffeine rush is much needed for the majority of us to beat the daily blues. However, a sleep expert has advised against drinking coffee as soon as you wake up.

According to Rex Isap, the well-known sleep expert and CEO of Happy Beds, you should wait at least an hour after waking up in the morning before consuming your first cup of coffee as the human brain produces the chemical adenosine throughout the day, which builds up when you stay awake for a long time, making you fall asleep sooner. But, the caffeine with countering effect blocks the receptors to keep you awake, thus resulting in wakefulness.

We also wake up to high levels of cortisol – a chemical associated with stress – which can result in possible tolerance for caffeine by countering its effect if you have coffee within a few minutes after waking up. So, instead, you could use our five healthy alternatives to remain active throughout the day.

1. Turmeric Latte aka Golden Milk

The Golden Milk is the Internet’s favorite beverage for boasting multiple benefits. All you have to do is pair turmeric, black pepper, and cinnamon with warm milk (vegans can use coconut and almond milk) and add natural sweeteners if needed. Turmeric Latte is known for its antioxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory properties and can serve as a great substitute for morning coffee.

2. Chicory Root Coffee

If you are extremely addicted to caffeine to ditch it completely, try the coffee made of chicory roots. This is the best option for coffee lovers to cut back on caffeine and is known to improve your digestive health as well as reduce inflammation. Happy Beds advises caution for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

3. Matcha Tea

This is yet another Internet-popular tea plant drink that can be consumed a few hours before sleep to reap the most benefits the next morning. This can also be consumed first thing in the morning for a caffeine boost. The L-theanine among Matcha tea’s several other properties is said to improve sleep, concentration, and learning.

4. Peppermint Tea

Peppermint tea will not just act as a muscle relaxant and help in better digestion, but the minty flavor leaves the mouth feeling cool, which is extremely refreshing. Happy Bed blog notes that the same can be had before bedtime as it could “contribute to winding down before sleep, even though comprehensive studies on its sleep-improving effects are limited.”

5. Ginger tea

Ginger tea can be consumed at any time of the time. It can be used as a substitute for coffee first thing in the morning or consumed after a meal to help in digestion. It may also contribute to prolonged periods of sleep, as noted by the UK blog.
