45 to 55-year-old women are most misunderstood

Speaking on Steven Bartlett’s Diary Of A CEO podcast, Dr Mindy Pelz said that women in this age group are often struggling silently while going through menopause.

“From 40 till about 55, that is about a 10 to 15-year period where a woman’s brain has to recalibrate to these loss of humans, and so our moods are all over the place,” she said.

Menopause occurs when a woman’s period stops, and they go through a series of hormonal changes which can impact their daily life in huge ways.

As explained by MedlinePlus, some of the common symptoms include hot flushes, trouble sleeping, mood changes and bladder issues, but people often have no idea a woman is going through this.

These symptoms begin in the time leading up to menopause, known as perimenopause, and can last for several years.

Hormones on a ‘rollercoaster ride’ during menopause

Pelz explained that the hormone oestrogen is on a “rollercoaster ride” while progesterone is “plummeting”.

“While progesterone goes down, we are less stress resilient, so little things are going to irritate us like they’ve never irritated us before,” she revealed.

Women can be easily “triggered” during this time, and others around don’t understand because menopause still isn’t spoken about enough.

“We need to have more breaks, we need more nurturing,” Pelz continued. “We need to have more love brought our way because we just can’t handle stress the same way.”

On top of that, the women’s health expert explained that woman are unable to hold information in the same way they used to and forget things more.

She said others need to start “understanding” what women are dealing with and have “more compassion,” because “we don’t even understand our own selves”.

Next time a woman you know in this age group has mood swings or forgets something, take it easy on them. They are struggling more than you know.
