3 habits a doctor gave to stay healthy

Several studies have highlighted the impact of our diet and habits on our health. Not only do certain ultra-processed foods we enjoy the most contribute to critical illnesses but also take a toll on our mental health.

In his video, the critical care physician discusses three lifestyle choices you should avoid for a quality life.

Alcohol

“I used to drink alcohol in the past, but now after learning about the personal effects it’s had on myself including sleep, mental health, happiness level as well as my productivity, I’ve decided to cut it out. Now it’s more so only on special occasion basis or when I am traveling,” the doctor says.

Although alcohol can have a relaxing effect on you when you’re under its influence, it’s classified as a depressant. Studies show it can affect your ability to think clearly. Regular or excessive alcohol drinking is associated with several physical and mental health issues.

Vaping

Vaping may be “better” than smoking – even though there aren’t enough long-term studies to fully determine its impact on health – but the doctor advises staying away from it.

He warns of increasing cases of “vape lung” – a respiratory illness that stems from using vaping products that include nicotine and Vitamin E.

‘Natural and herbal’ medications online

The doctor warns against using medications dubbed “naturally and herbal” usually sold online without going through standard safety tests. “This is not a regulated industry, meaning anyone can put anything in a pill, label it as organic,” he says.

He doesn’t condemn natural medicines and supplements as they boast certain benefits. However, he emphasizes checking the source thoroughly to ensure that the product is from a reputed brand or company with “decades of experience or expertise in the industry of selling and well respected in the market” with good reviews from professionals who can verify what the product contains.
