12 elderly people were asked what they used to do for fun and their answers show how lucky we are
With the mundane routines of everyday life, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are to live in such an advanced society.
12 elderly people were asked what they used to do for fun in their 20s, and their answers will make you grateful for the life you live today.

What elderly people used to do for fun
A British care home worker called Charlotte asked all the residents what they used to do at her age (25) and shared the video on TikTok.
Here’s what they said…
Person 1
“Not a lot, there wasn’t much to do.”
Person 2
“I spent a lot of time with neighbors from my street. We visited each other’s houses often.”
Person 3
“I loved going to the pictures. I think I liked the salted popcorn more than the films.”
Person 4
“I went on lots of holidays with my brother and his wife. I liked the warmer places.”
Person 5
“I was a rock and roll dancer at Warrington Boys Club. I enjoyed a mild and bitter mix in my local.”
Person 6
“My daughter would have only been 1. I enjoyed taking photos of her to cherish the memories.”
Person 7
“I enjoyed going to social clubs with my husband for a drink of cola and a dance.”
Person 8
“I enjoyed cycling all over Yorkshire. I had a yellow racing bike.”
Person 9
“Tennis and jive dancing.”
Person 10
“I loved dancing and wore mini skirts.”
Person 11
“I liked going to the pub to drink stout and have a dance.”
Person 12
“I played bingo at the Box Works. I also loved to dance.”

Their answers show how lucky we are
The things they did for fun included dancing, going to the movie theatre, playing bingo and visiting the pub for a drink – which are all normal in our society.
One man said there “wasn’t much to do” in those days, showing how lucky we are to live in a world where there is so much going on each and every day.
Another woman said drinking Coca-Cola at the social club was her idea of fun. Now, drinking soda is just an ordinary activity, not something you do on special occasions.
Wearing mini skirts, owning a bike and socialising with neighbors were some more of their answers. In 2024, many don’t even bother making friends with their neighbors at all.
Only one of the women said she used to go on holidays abroad to warmer places, another thing many of us take for granted nowadays.
How to be more grateful in life
Everyone can take steps to be more grateful in life, and identifying the goodness will improve your mental, physical, and emotional health.
As explained by Calm, here are 10 ways to practice gratitude:

- Create a gratitude jar: Write down what you are grateful for and put it in a jar to read later.
- Volunteer or give back: Helping others gives you more purpose and evokes gratitude.
- Set gratitude alarms: Set a daily reminder to pause and reflect on what you are thankful for.
- Go on gratitude walks: Do a solo walk with no headphones and admire your surroundings.
- Say ‘Thank you’ more: A simple ‘Thank you’ can go a long away and spread positivity.
