There are some pretty big cultural differences between the UK and US which seem crazy to people from each country.

Some things that are normal in England are totally insane across the pond, and a TikTok user has shared some of them.

Andrea Celeste moved from California to London in 2021 and often shares videos comparing the two countries.

She has a series called “Things that are socially acceptable in England that might confuse Americans” where she lists some of the biggest differences. There are 43 different parts, and these are just some of the culture shocks she has experienced.

1. You can’t turn right at red traffic lights

One difference between England and America she shared is that you can’t turn right at red traffic lights. In many states, it’s legal to turn right on a red light as long as it’s safe.

2. School uniforms are worn at most schools

Next up, school uniforms are mandatory at the majority of primary and secondary schools in the UK. In America, only 18.8% of public schools require their students to wear a uniform.

3. There are no school buses

There are no school buses in England either. If parents can’t take their kids to school on time due to work or other commitments, they drop them off early at a breakfast club.

4. Coca-Cola is made with real sugar

Coca-Cola might taste a bit different in the two countries too. That’s because the UK makes it with real sugar, but the soda contains high fructose syrup in the US.

5. Shops close by 6pm on Sundays

In England, all shops legally close early, which doesn’t happen in America. The UK law states that stores must only open between 10am and 6pm.

6. There are sheep everywhere

Another difference between the UK and US is that there are sheep everywhere. As soon as you leave a city and get into the countryside, the fields are full of them.

7. There are no dangerous animals

One thing Americans might find strange about the UK is there are no dangerous animals. You don’t have to worry about an alligator or bear strolling into your backyard.

8. People hang around after eating

In England, it’s very normal to hang around at a restaurant after you’ve finished eating a meal. Across the pond, you pay your cheque and leave soon after finishing.

9. Nudity is allowed on TV

The TikTok user had a huge shock when she realized nudity is allowed on the TV after 9pm in England. This is known as the watershed, after which more mature themes can be shown.

10. There are more types of beer

In the US, people only really drink light lagers, but the UK has a whole host of different beers including ales and stouts.

11. Some lawyers still wear wigs

Finally, you may be surprised to hear that some lawyers in England are still required to wear white wigs. It’s not just something you see in movies!
