103-year-old’s secret to a great life

The woman was speaking to TikTok user Sprout, who interviews people for their live advice, and explained that the secret to a great life is to always “look for the light”.

“If you’re looking for the darkness, you’ll find it. The sun always comes up and the moon comes up and the stars. There’s always light to be looked for if we look for it,” she said.

She highlighted the importance of always being positive in life and looking for the good rather than focusing on the bad.

Your mindset has a huge impact on each day and you should always be a ‘glass half full’ person rather than a ‘glass half empty’. If a glass is filled halfway with water, optimists will usually say that it ishalf-full, whereas pessimists will point out that it’s half-empty.

The 103-year-old added that if you have something to share with the world, like a talent or a piece of information, “life gets more exciting” for everyone.

How to be more optimistic in life

Being optimistic isn’t always easy, especially when life throws difficult situations at us, but there are some things you can do to be more positive.

BetterHelp recommends changing your explanatory style from negative to positive, which is the way you describe a specific event in your life.

A negative explanatory style makes you think that undesirable events are caused by an inherent, unchangeable bad quality within yourself that you cannot change. With apositive explanatory style, you are more optimistic and believe that bad events occur due to external factors.

Journalling and practising mindfulness is another way to be more optimistic. Every day, you write down things you are grateful for, which creates afeeling of thankfulness and appreciation for life.

Spending time with optimistic people, speaking to yourself positively, letting go of your past and following a positive role model will all help to create a more optimistic life too.
