Avril Lavigne has been back in the studio recently, recording her seventh album (now finished and awaiting release). Now, however, fans are reflecting on her recent past, and the inspiration for her previous album, Head Above Water. What happened to Avril Lavigne in 2014?
What happened to Avril Lavigne?
In April 2015, Canadian singer, songwriter and actress Avril Lavigne revealed her Lyme disease diagnosis to People Magazine.
The diagnosis dated back to shortly after her birthday the previous year, in 2014.
In the interview, Lavigne describes barely being able to eat. “I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move,” she told the magazine. “I thought I was dying.”
“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand,” she said. “It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”
Days later, Billboard interviewed Lavigne on the subject of her Lyme disease diagnosis. She described the recover process, and the responsibility she then felt to raise awareness of the disease.
“It was a simple bug bite and it could happen to anybody.”
Since then, she’s been raising awareness about Lyme disease
“People need to know about it”, Avril continued. “Because it’s not talked about that much and a lot of the information that’s out there is inaccurate.”
Later, on Good Morning America, she described the period as “literally the worst time of my life”.
“It was so stupid. [The doctors] would pull up their computer and be like, ‘Chronic fatigue syndrome’ or ‘Why don’t you try to get out of bed, Avril, and just go play the piano?’ or ‘Are you depressed?’”
But they were asking the wrong questions.
Lavigne’s #FightLyme concert in September 2020

It took place on 25 October. Proceeds from tickets and merchandise went in part to the Global Lyme Alliance, with the remainder going to her charity, Avril Lavigne Foundation.
