Who is British poker player Jack Oliver?

26-year-old poker player Jack Oliver earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Kent.

It may come as no surprise that he was a member of Kent Poker Society.

He left university in 2018, having spent a year in industry, and having raised money for Breast Cancer Now by running a marathon in Prague, Czechia.

Oliver spent just over a year as a financial analyst at Jaguar Land Rover, per his LinkedIn profile, in the West Midlands town of Solihull.

According to Oliver’s player profile on The Hendon Mob, he resides in Manchester. He is currently ranked 19,372nd on the All Time Money List; his Global Poker Index Ranking number is 4,108.

When did he start playing poker?

Jack Oliver has been playing poker since at least 2016 – he finished ninth in a £275 buy-in student poker championship in April of that year.

Since then, and excluding this latest high-profile win, his competition winnings amount to a relatively modest £87,000, reports The Sun.

Poker News has charted Oliver’s “Main Event Story” here, including details of key hands he played along the way. His biggest successes over the course of the week came on the sixth and seventh days, during which he multiplied his chips by four and five times respectively.

Ultimately, he came third, taking home $3 million.

His reaction to coming in third was refreshingly understated, and even modest. “I can’t complain, can I?” he said during a post-tournament interview.

“I think I played well and that’s kind of all that matters really. That’s all you can do in this game.”

Who are Koray Aldemir and George Holmes, who beat Jack Oliver?

Koray Aldemir, from Germany, won the tournament, with George Holmes coming in second. Holmes, who is from the US, took $4.3m on the final day of the competition.

Poker News describes him as a “recreational player”. His 2021 World Series journey almost came to an abrupt end during the second level of Day 7; he found himself with just over one big blind left after a head-to-head with Jack Oliver.

He had just 475,000 left in tournament chips. But a startling comeback saw him end the day with 32 million.

Aldemir is German but lives in Vienna, Austria. He is ranked 67th in the All Time Money List, with a popularity ranking of 195.
