Who is inside Golden Freddy in Five Nights At Freddy’s (FNaF)?

Explaining the lore behind mysterious Five Nights At Freddy’s (FNaF) anti-hero Golden Freddy has occupied multiple Reddit threads – with individual subreddits devoted to answering specific questions, such as who possesses him, and how he is different to the other lost souls. What is Golden Freddy, and who is in him/it?

What is Golden Freddy?

Golden Freddy is a ghostlike entity that takes on the form of a yellow animatronic bear. In the first game’s files, he is simply Yellow Bear.

He is a gold-coloured version of Freddy Fazbear who appears in the Office, but only after a particular sequence of events.

Several fan sites and forums link to what is claimed to be Scott Cawthon’s original Intellectual Property Rights submission regarding the character. The link is currently broken

However, the description reads as follows: Golden Freddy is, in the words of his creator, an “animatronic bipedal gold colored bear, Freddy Fazbear, wearing black top-hat, bow-tie, and holding microphone”.

Who is in Golden Freddy?

But in FNaF, nothing is ever quite as it seems – including Golden Freddy. The bipedal animatronic yellow bear is just the physical form. What is behind it, or inside it?

One prominent theory regarding Golden Freddy’s backstory is that his spirit belonged to one of the five missing children tied to the original Missing Children Incident (MCI). Other theories connect him to the “Bite Victim” from Five Nights At Freddy’s 4.

The “Goldenboth” or “Goldenduo” theory posits that Golden Freddy is possessed by both the Bite Victim and the fifth MCI victim.

Also worth noting is the theory that Mike Schmidt is actually hallucinating Golden Freddy – as in, he’s a figment of his imagination. Alternatively, because he has no reflection on the monitor screens, he could be a ghost or apparition, rather than a hallucination.

Redditers on the unique arrogance of FNaF’s GF

Reddit and Quora are where FNaF fans go to compare theories on the franchise’s extensive lore.

One user reckons Golden Freddy is responsible for multiple ills, including: Jeremy’s death, Vanny’s brainwashing, and an MCI at PizzaPlex. Others, responding, call him “unironically selfish”, “a cursed selfish soul” and even the “2nd most evil character in the series” – behind Afton.

Elsewhere, fans have been discussing whether or not GF exists physically and tangibly, or not.

“Golden Freddy isn’t a physical animatronic”, writes one. “It’s a ghost that appears as one.” But if he isn’t physical, comes the response, “how can he kill you?” The answer, apparently, is that ghosts in FNAF have “selective intangibility”.

“Yeah. That’s how most ghosts in fiction work.”
