Liverpool lost at home to Everton for the first time since September 1999 on Saturday night.
Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson ended Everton’s Anfield hoodoo as the reigning champions’ struggles continued.
Jurgen Klopp had to use yet another central defensive partnership when Jordan Henderson limped off in the first half to be replaced by Nat Phillips.
In the Times, Tony Cascarino said he feels Liverpool’s midfield is just as concerning as their defence and that Gini Wijnaldum looks exhausted.
“I think Liverpool’s midfield is as much of a problem for them at the moment as their defence,” he wrote.
“The best trio there is Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum but because the first two have spent big parts of the season playing at the back or injured, Wijnaldum looks exhausted to me.
“Thiago Alcântara is clearly a class player on the ball, but he gives a lot of fouls away and I’m not sure Liverpool are a better team with him there, in the same way they weren’t when Philippe Coutinho was in the side.”
The issues at the back have also robbed Liverpool of their first choice midfield, which has had knock-on effects for both Thiago and Wijnaldum.
If either Wijnaldum or Thiago were playing with Fabinho and Henderson in midfield, it would no doubt help them perform.
But the injuries have distorted the balance of the whole team and fatigue looks like a problem too.
Ozan Kabak had another tough Premier League game, but bringing him in so late in the window hasn’t helped.
There’s plenty for Klopp to sort out and the games are coming thick and fast.
