Mike Dean has been appointed to referee Arsenal’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday.

Across a career spanning 20 years, the Cheshire native has been in charge of more than 500 Premier League matches and dished out 105 red cards.

Despite this, Dean has something of a cult following on social media due to his extravagant brand of officiating.

One group who don’t subscribe to the Mike Dean fan club, however, are the Gunners’ faithful. It’s fair to say they’re not best pleased about news he will be in charge at Old Trafford.

Across the years Mike Dean – whether rightly or wrongly – has gained a reputation among Arsenal fans for not liking them very much.

With all that in mind some Gunners fans on social media are not feeling too confident ahead of Sunday”s match.

Arsenal to pay the penalty

Gunners fans on social media were also unhappy for another reason.

Mike Dean has given the Red Devils more penalties than any other team during his 20-year refereeing career.

To add to that,Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side won more spot kicks than any other team last season. Despite only joining in January this year, Bruno Fernandes has already scored 11 from 12 yards.

That’s a stat not lost on some United fans. They hope history can repeat itself on Sunday.

Not all keen on Dean

Not all Manchester United fans are sharing in this excitement though.

His unorthodox refereeing style can be divisive at times.

Despite his seeming generosity to the Red Devils in the past, many United supporters on Twitter actually think he favours Arsenal in matches between the teams! Who’d be a referee?
