Alan Shearer believes Joelinton had his ‘best game’ when facing Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, when speaking on Match of the Day 2.

Joelinton hasn’t been known for his goalscoring antics lately, but the Brazilian forward did manage to score against Spurs.

That goal was just his second in the Premier League so far this season.

The 26-year-old also has two league assists and two league cup goals to his name.

However, Alan Shearer now believes Joelinton has ‘set a standard’ with his performance against Jose Mourinho’s side.

Shearer on Joelinton

When speaking on Match of the Day 2, Shearer was very complimentary about Joelinton’s performance against Spurs:

“Very much like a lot of the team, he’s now set a standard and he has to stay the same as well.

“Because I thought that was his best game in a black and white shirt today.

“He got in there, he scored his goal and should have scored another couple of goals.

“But it was a good all round performance I thought.”

How good was Joelinton’s performance against Spurs?

The forward had three shots in total but only two of them managed to hit the target.

One of these did end up in the back of the net though, so Joelinton had a pretty good shot-to-goal ratio against the north London side.

For comparison, Harry Kane had four shots on target and managed to score twice against the Magpies.

Despite his size and build, Joelinton only won two aerial duels, which is four fewer than Joe Rodon who led the way with six.

However, these performances need to come much more regularly from the Brazilain.

Because a striker that can only score two goals in 24 Premier League matches isn’t much use to any team.
