Borussia Dortmund are interested in beating Liverpool to the signature of Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic, according to Sky Sports Germany.

The Bundesliga giants have apparently made contact with the talented Serbian, with a race now on to secure Milenkovic’s services.

Max Belfield, of Sky Germany, reported Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Manchester United have also been in touch with Fiorentina about the 23-year-old defender.

Man, myth, Milenkovic

It’s not hard to see why Milenkovic is attracting so much interest.

Red Star Belgrade manager Dejan Stankovic once told ESPN: “(Milenkovic) is the most talented centre-back Serbia have had since Vidic.

“They definitely have one thing in common – both are fearless.”

Milenkovic has already made more than 100 appearances for the Serie A side and been capped 26 times by Serbia.

When in charge of the Serbia national team, manager Mladen Krstajic included Milenkovic in his 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup. The defender appeared in all three group-stage games.

Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli even handed the Serb the captain’s armband for two Coppa Italia ties.

Liverpool looking for answers

Liverpool’s desperate search for a new centre-back reached panic level during last month’s transfer window.

Signing Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke and Ben Davies for £1.6 million (Guardian) from Preston North End was Jurgen Klopp’s last-minute solution to his rising defensive injury list.

Kabak has lost two of his three Liverpool matches so far, while Davies has yet to play a minute for the Reds.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip should hopefully be fit again for next season.

However, is that a risk Klopp can afford to take if Liverpool want to challenge for the title again?

Interest from the rest

If Liverpool are to sign Milenkovic, they will need to move fast.

Manchester United and Dortmund are having defensive issues of their own.

United legend Paul Scholes told BT Sport the Red Devils must sign another centre-back to partner Harry Maguire if they realistically want to win the league.

Liverpool will have similar ambitions. The race to sign Milenkovic could go to the wire.
