Tottenham are into the last four of the EFL Cup after last night’s 3-1 win over Stoke.
It was the stereotypical windy Wednesday night in Stoke and Spurs stood up to the test.
Harry Winks got a rare start and put in a man of the match performance and Gareth Bale got on the scoresheet.
It was a good night for Spurs and club legend Ossie Ardiles sent a message to Jose Mourinho and the squad on Twitter after the game.
Spurs have waited since 2008 for a trophy, when they scooped the EFL Cup by beating Chelsea 2-1.
Mourinho was brought to north London primarily to end that wait and only Brentford stand between Spurs and April’s Wembley final.
The Bees are a quality side, but if you’d given Mourinho the chance to play a Championship side at home for a place in a major competition when the competition kicked off, he’d surely have taken it.
That’s especially pertinent when you remember Spurs had to get through their first match against Chelsea during a week where they played four games.
It wasn’t a perfect night, given Dele Alli incurred the wrath of Mourinho after Stoke’s goal and was hooked.
Alli didn’t take his chance to impress but Bale and Winks did. They’ll hope for more chances in the games over Christmas.
As Ardiles said, Tottenham’s wait for a trophy is edging closer to a conclusion.
One of the Manchester clubs lie in wait in the final if Spurs can navigate their own London derby in January.
