Everton defender Mason Holgate has opened up about how he feels he’s been playing this season, speaking to the club’s official website.

Holgate admitted he’s unhappy with his level of performances so far this campaign, despite Carlo Ancelotti clearly showing faith in the 24-year-old. He has started Everton’s past five league games.

Holgate said: “I am coming into (form) a bit more.

“I’m not where I’d like to be and hitting it consistently but I can only work as hard as possible.”

Holgate said he wasn’t being too harsh on himself regarding his recent performances for the Toffees – but he still isn’t pleased.

The 24-year-old said: “I have not done too badly but I’m not near my normal standards.”

Holgate played all 90 minutes in Everton’s 2-0 win over arch rivals Liverpool at the weekend.

Whoscored gave the centre-back a 6.96 out of ten rating, which is good on anyone’s cards.

And while that level of performance isn’t anything new for the Englishman this season, hearing Holgate feels he’s been underperforming is exciting news for Everton fans.

Holgate – the statistics

Holgate is averaging 6.86 out of ten on Whoscored overall this season, the eighth-best in the Everton squad. Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads the way with an average of 7.33.

The 24-year-old has also made the third-most tackles and the most interceptions out of Ancelotti’s squad.

Looking at the cold hard facts, it appears as though Holgate is being a tad harsh on himself.

Nevertheless, Ancelotti will be pleased to see one of his players demanding more of themselves.

In Holgate’s case, on paper at least, there’s proof why he deserves his place in Everton’s starting XI.

And the Everton defender will hopefully reap the rewards for his hard work and dedication to the blue shirt.
