Serge Gnabry’s departure from Arsenal in August 2016 still haunts the club now.

The German left the Emirates Stadium for £4.25 million (Telegraph), joining Werder Bremen.

He has now become one of the best wingers in the world, having struggled to get a look-in in north London.

Gnabry’s now a Champions League winner, while Arsenal are still searching for solutions on the wing.

Gunners legend Ian Wright has admitted he feared that Emile Smith Rowe would be another Gnabry going into the January window.

He told his Wrighty’s House podcast that he expected Smith Rowe would leave the Emirates if he couldn’t get into Mikel Arteta’s side.

Smith Rowe has been in the starting 11 for the past three games as the Gunners have notched up three wins which have turned their season around.

“For me, Emile Smith Rowe has paid his dues,” said Wright. “He’s had his injuries, he’s been on loan, he’s done his stuff.”

“What Mikel has done and the timing which he’s done it as well is absolutely perfect.

“I think if Smith Rowe doesn’t get into this team, at this stage, persisting with people who are not performing at the levels they should – Willian or Pepe – you lose him.

“Especially with January coming. Then we’ve got another Serge Gnabry on our hands. Without a doubt. Smith Rowe and Martinelli have energised Lacazette.”
