Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate have praised fellow Everton defender Michael Keane and his form for the club this season, speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s Five YouTube channel.
All three Toffees defenders will have a huge spring in their step after beating Liverpool 2-0 in the derby at the weekend.
Keane, Holgate, and Godfrey were all crucial components in Everton keeping a clean sheet during their historic win at Anfield.
Following the excellent defensive display, Ferdinand suggested the English trio could be in contention for Gareth Southgate’s squad for this summer’s European Championships.
Ferdinand, who knows a thing or two about playing for England, asked Holgate and Godfrey how they think Keane’s season is going.
Godfrey said: “It has been good playing with (Keane), either at full-back or centre-back.
“He’s obviously shown his quality. He might not get the credit he deserves but he’s definitely one of the top centre-backs in the league at the minute.
“He’s flying. He’s doing well. I’m happy for him.”
And Holgate was happy to continue the praise.
He told Ferdinand: “It’s probably the best season (Keane) has had while I’ve been with him. On the ball, he looks so composed.
“Definitely at this point in the season, I can’t think of many centre-backs who’ve had a better season than him.”
The cold, hard statistics back up Holgate and Godfrey’s beliefs.
According to the Premier League website, Keane is second only to Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo for clearances (105).
The Everton man is also is joint fourth for headed clearances (40) and joint sixth for blocks (20).
Add the four goals Keane has scored this term and his value in both boxes is undeniable.
The 28-year-old has only missed two games across all competitions in 2020/21, highlighting his importance to Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Three Lions on the chest
An England call-up may well be on the cards for Keane, even if may be too early for Holgate and Godfrey.
Southgate has capped Keane 12 times and he appeared frequently during England’s European Championship qualification campaign.
If Keane continues this form, his name will be one of the first on the squad list for the Euros.
