Tottenham found it tough going at West Brom yesterday, but eventually, Harry Kane sealed a late 1-0 win.

Spurs are being talked about tentatively as title contenders and the main reasons are the performances of Kane and Heung-min Son.

Kane was subdued yesterday, but eventually won the day, while Tony Cascarino in the Times felt Son was marked out of the match by Darnell Furlong.

The South Korea captain had an early chance to score, but dallied uncharacteristically on an afternoon where the Baggies impressed Cascarino.

“West Bromwich Albion were excellent and unlucky to lose against Tottenham. This performance against Spurs offers hope for Slaven Bilic’s side.

They were organised, played with energy and created a few chances. Full back Darnell Furlong, 25, was brilliant and didn’t give Son Heung-min a chance all game, which is a real achievement given his class.

“They may have only three points so far this season but they have played some better football than I expected when they were promoted. If they can build on this display they can climb the table.”

We looked at the numbers Son put up yesterday on WhoScored, and that aforementioned early strike was his only shot on target.

He had 55 touches – three less than Kane – and made just one key pass.

Son kept the ball well; only one Spurs player bettered his pass completion rate of 88.9 per cent and a manager like Jose Mourinho may well value that kind of reliability in possession on a day when it didn’t all go the winger’s way.

He was fouled three times – no Spurs player suffered more – and was dispossessed twice, so it’s clear he was given strict attention.

Furlong, in his first top flight season, did an impressive job but Son is a team player and likely won’t mind, given the win came eventually.
