News that Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign defender Ozan Kabak from Bundesliga strugglers Schalke has been met with mixed reactions by fans on social media.
Sky Sports reported the Reds were in a race against time to sign the 20-year-old ahead of today’s 11pm transfer window deadline.
Kabak is the third centre-back Liverpool have been linked with in their pursuit to provide cover for the injured Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
Ben Davies is on the verge of leaving Preston North End for Anfield, according to reports, while Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi has also been linked to Liverpool.
Kabak – get in or get back
Some Liverpool fans on Twitter weren’t impressed when they learned about the potential signing from Schalke.
Kabak plays for the Bundesliga’s bottom club, which has only won once in the league all season.
Schalke have the worst defence in the division, having conceded 49 goals in 19 games. Kabak has featured in 14 of those matches.
The 20-year-old joined the German side from Stuttgart in 2019 and has made 42 appearances for the league strugglers.
Jurgen Klopp’s desperation to get bodies in before the deadline may have been highlighted by last-minute moves.
The Kabak move was so unexpected, some Liverpool fans on Twitter hadn’t even heard of the player:
Others were more impressed and believe they could gain a valuable player in the Turkey international.
Whatever the thoughts of Liverpool fans, the transaction may not be straightforward. Schalke still want to find a replacement of their own if Kabak does depart. The deadline for signings in Germany is 5pm.
Sky also said Liverpool were working on a loan with an option to buy Kabak in the summer, which suggests Klopp views him as a long-term solution rather than a quick fix.
