Bayern Munich defender David Alaba is reportedly set to hold talks with Chelsea in January about a potential move, as per Bild.
The 28-year-old’s contract with the German champions is set to expire in the summer. This has led to plenty of speculation regarding who he might play for next.
It now appears Chelsea have taken pole position in the race to secure his signature.
Chelsea set their sights on the Bundesliga again
The south London club spent big in the summer, bringing in the likes of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner from Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig respectively.
It seems their business with Bundesliga clubs may not be over yet either as the club steps up their interest in Alaba.
The latest news has caused quite a stir. Alaba, who can play in central defence or left-back, could shore up a defence that hasn’t looked exactly watertight in recent seasons.
Some Chelsea fans have responded to the speculation and appear to be excited by the prospect of Alaba coming to Stamford Bridge.
Here are the pick of the reactions on Twitter…
Alaba’s glittering career
Alaba has been a regular at Bayern since breaking into the first team in 2010.
During his time at the club he has won nine German titles and two Champions League trophies.
The latest of those European triumphs came last season, when Bayern edged PSG 1-0 in the final.
He would undoubtedly add experience to Chelsea’s back line, which currently contains promising English full-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell.
Another step in the right direction
His arrival could be the boost Chelsea need as they look to mount a title challenge this season.
The Blues are third in the table, two points behind Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. They host the former this Sunday, knowing a win would see them jump above Jose Mourinho’s side.
