McDonald’s have launched a number of successful partnerships throughout 2022, but unfortunately a collaboration with Hello Kitty and Sanrio is not on the cards.

Last month, McDonald’s found success in their collaboration with streetwear fashion brand Cactus Plant Flea Market (CPFM). The fast food chain released Adult Happy Meals featuring four-eyed versions of the McDonald’s mascots.

This month, reports went viral – thanks to TikTok – that McDonald’s were partnering with Sanrio to create a new Happy Meal. Unfortunately, despite the hype, this is untrue.

Here’s what you need to know about the former collab, which has some thinking it is returning this fall 2022.

No, McDonald’s and Sanrio don’t have a 2022 collab

A viral TikTok video falsely reported that Sanrio were collaborating with McDonald’s on an upcoming Happy Meal. They used a report from Sanrio’s website in the video to confirm the news.

Unfortunately, this is an old piece from Sanrio’s website, taken from a previous collaboration.

“The hello sanrio Happy Meal promotion launches at participating McDonald’s locations in the US and Canada on November 22 and will run through December 19, or while supplies last,” the announcement reads. This had the TikTok user thinking a collab would be launching this November 22, 2022. However, this promotion was in November 2016. The press release which went viral this month was originally published on November 17, 2016.

McDonald’s have collaborated with Hello Kitty several times

The hello sanrio Happy Meals from November 2016 are not the only time the two companies have collaborated. They have had several promotional collabs over the past few decade.

In 2002, McDonald’s worked with Sanrio to create a special Hello Kitty range of toys and accessories for their Happy Meals. Check out the commercial here. In 2004, the fast food chain helped celebrate Hello Kitty’s 30th anniversary with a special promotional collab. They then released McDonald’s x Hello Kitty watches in 2009, followed by a special 40th anniversary collab in 2014.

Most recently, they collaborated on another hello sanrio Happy Meal box in November/December 2017.

Revisiting the Hello Kitty toys made for McDonald’s

In the press release about the happy sanrio Happy Meals, Sanrio promised that they were bringing eight characters, each with their own themed environment, to the meals.

Here are all of the featured characters and their environment from the 2016 collection:

  • Chococat in Chococat’s Furniture Store
  • Keroppi in Keroppi’s Mart
  • Pink Hello Kitty in Kitty’s Fashion Boutique
  • Badtz-Maru in Badtz-Maru’s Arcade
  • Red Hello Kitty in Kitty’s House
  • Pompompurin in Pompompurin’s Cafe
  • Pochacco in Pochacco’s Sports Shop
  • My Melody in Melody’s Music Shop

The Hello Kitty and My Melody carrier baskets also went viral this month. Again, these were featured in a promotion from two years ago. It was also released in Singapore, not the United States. However, you still can purchase the adorable carriers from some online retailers.

What toy collaborations does McDonald’s have in the works?

Although you might be disappointed by the false Sanrio collaboration this fall, McDonald’s have a number of exciting toy collabs throughout fall.

This month sees the fast food chain work with Marvel to release a line of toys inspired by Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. McDonald’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Happy Meal was released on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 to fans in the US.

McDonald’s VP of US Marketing, Brand Content and Engagement, Jennifer Healan explained why they decided to partner up with Marvel for this Happy Meal.

“It set a whole new standard for representation on the big screen,” Healan said. “And now, we’re excited to bring that experience to our restaurants and help fans see and celebrate their inner hero with this new Happy Meal – because seeing is believing.”
