It’s almost race weekend as Formula One returns to Portugal tomorrow for the Portuguese Grand Prix. It is the third round of this year’s F1 World Championship with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen only split by a single point at the top of the driver’s standings.

The opening two races saw Hamilton win in Bahrain before Verstappen took the top step of the podium last time out at Imola – with only a fastest lap for Hamilton splitting the two title challengers.

The return to the Algarve International Circuit near Portimao, is the second time F1 will have raced around the 4.653 km (2.891 mi) circuit – with Hamilton breaking Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 race wins when he picked up the chequered flag for the 92nd time last October.

Hamilton’s victory last year saw him finish the race 25.592 seconds ahead of team-mate Valterri Bottas; the second-biggest gap from P1 to P2 all season.

With the Mercedes’ of Hamilton and Bottas looking a little less imperious than it did last time at Portimao, Red Bull will be hoping they can keep right on the Silver Arrows’ as F1 returns to Portugal.

The race will use the slightly revised schedule for 2021 with practice sessions shortened while qualifying will use the usual three sessions with Portimao not one of the cirtuits considered for the new Sprint Qualifying races well see three times this season.
