Some Katy Perry fans are wondering whether the singer is Republican after she voted Rick Caruso for LA mayor in last week’s elections.
Democrat rep Karen Bass has become the first female mayor of Los Angeles in its 241-year history after defeating businessman Caruso.
The Guardian reports Bass had amassed a lead of almost 47,000 votes by the time 70 per cent of the votes had been counted on Wednesday, November 16.
One person she didn’t get support from was Katy Perry – and that has left her fans torn.
Why do fans think Katy Perry is a Republican?
Fans of the Dark Horse singer have been left wondering whether Perry is a supporter of the Republican Party after she endorsed Bass’ opponent, Caruso.
A week ago the 38-year-old posted a selfie on Instagram at the polling station in which she voted for Caruso along with the caption: “🇺🇸I am voting for a myriad of reasons (see the news) but in particular because Los Angeles is a hot mess atm.”
Alongside the comment, she added the hashtags “let’s go Caruso,” “yes to measure 28,” “yes to measure 1” and “do you but just use your vote ok US.”
Rick Caruso vote worries some Perry fans
The problem with branding Katy Perry a Republican falls down somewhat when you consider Caruso is, in fact, a Democrat. He was formerly a Republican before becoming independent and then switching to the Democrats.
That important piece of information seems to have been missed by some of Perry’s fans on Twitter:
When did Caruso switch parties?
It’s easy to see why people are confused. Although the politician ran as a Democrat in the 2022 Los Angeles mayoral election, he was previously registered as non-partisan, and before that he was a Republican.
The billionaire previously floated the idea of running for LA mayor in 2009 and 2013, the LA Times reports, but this was his first big move into the political world.
In January 2022, he first registered as a Democrat after a big open letter on social media in which he said: “I am registering as a Democrat so I can stand firmly on the side of the fundamental values we will all need to invoke and enforce to thwart the coming attacks on our democracy.”

Just years before that announcement, he was a supporter of the Republican party as, according to the federal election records reported by the LA Times, “political donations at the national level went to Republicans” including $100,000 in 2004 to a re-election committee supporting then-president George W Bush.
It was reported Caruso started donating to Democratic candidates for Congress in 2008 and 2009.
Katy Perry seems to be Democrat
So, which party might Katy Perry support? Well, Caruso is a registered Democrat and, in the past, Perry has supported the Democratic party. Some fans even backed the singer up by stating she is “NOT” a Republican and posted pictures of her with President Biden and Hillary Clinton, and holding a sign saying “Love trumps hate.”
In 2016, Perry openly opposed then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and performed in support of Bill Clinton at the Democratic National Convention.
A year ago the Firework singer performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. So, while it’s unclear why Perry chose to support Caruso over Bass, she appears to be firmly in support of the Democrats.
