Where does Jill Biden work? A petition for the First Lady to update the White House rose garden has gained traction online as some criticised former first lady Melania Trump’s cherry tree addition. Between news of the petition and President Biden’s first address to Congress, some have wondered if Jill is still teaching alongside her role as first lady.

If yes, where does Jill Biden teach, and what subjects are her specialty?

The First Lady balances teaching and her White House duties

While Jill Biden is now first and foremost known as the First Lady of the United States, she is also the first president’s wife to continue her professional career in parallel to her political duties.

However, this is not the first time she balances her teaching career with a role in the White House. Jill Biden also taught while she was Second Lady during the Obama administration.

Her career in teaching started back in the 1970s with her first teaching job at St. Mark’s High School in Wilmington.

She went on to join Claymont High School while studying for a Master’s in education at West Chester University.

Last year, during her husband’s presidential campaign, Jill Biden gave her convention speech at Brandywine High School, where she taught between 1991 and 1993.

Three decades after she started her teaching career, the First Lady received a Doctor of Education degree in 2007 from the University of Delaware, making her officially Dr Jill Biden.

What subject does Jill Biden teach?

The first lady is currently an English professor, having previously taken time away from her role to support her husband’s presidential campaign.

In an interview with CBS, Jill Biden spoke about how her role as First Lady would not keep her from teaching.

She explained: “If we get to the White House, I’m gonna continue to teach. It’s important, and I want people to value teachers and know their contributions, and lift up the profession.”

So, where does Jill Biden work?

Jill Biden is a professor within the English department at Northern Virginia Community College.

She first joined the university’s faculty in 2009, and is still in the role more than a decade on.
