Val Demings (full name: Valdez Venita Demings) has represented Florida’s 10th congressional district since 2017.
She previously served as chief of the Orlando Police Department – its first female chief – after serving with the OPD for 27 years.
Born in 1957, Val Demings is one of seven children. Her father was a janitor, her mother a maid.
She attended segregated schools in the 1960s and graduated from Wolfson High School in the 1970s.

Val Demings’ husband, Jerry Demings, is the former Orange County Sheriff, and currently serves as mayor of Orange County, Florida.
