Who was Irma Garcia?

Irma Garcia was a fourth-grade teacher at Robb Elementary School and long-time co-teacher with Eva Mireles.

According to her school profile, Garcia had been an educator for 23 years and had four children with husband of 24 years Joe Garcia.

“I have my eldest son Cristian completing Marine boot camp and another son Jose attending Texas State University,” Irma wrote on the Robb Elementary School website. “My eldest daughter Lyliana will be a sophomore in high school and my youngest Alysandra will be a 7th grader this year.”

Irma Garcia also shared that she enjoyed having a barbecue with her husband and often took country cruises to Concan, part of the Hill Country of Texas.

In 2019, Irma was one of 19 San Antonio-area teachers named as a finalist for a Trinity University prize, NBC reports.

Sadly, Garcia’s life was taken in the Robb Elementary shooting. According to her son’s friend, law enforcement at the scene saw Garcia shielding students before she died.

Social media flooded with messages of condolences

Following news of the school shooting, social media has been flooded with messages of condolence for the family of the victims.

“Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia were two of the greatest teachers Uvalde, Texas, has ever known. Their classroom was full of fun, growth, giggles, teamwork and, most of all, love. Their legacy will live in the hearts of our community forever,” one person tweeted.

“Let’s remember the HEROIC victims, not the shooter. Robb Elementary teacher Irma Garcia gave her life while trying to shield her young students from danger. Rest in peace Irma,” another wrote.

“Irma Garcia, thank you for protecting those babies. I’m so sorry,” someone else shared.

The Focus sends its thoughts and prayers to the families affected by the Uvalde shooting.
