Meet Rosa DeLauro

The answer to your question who is the purple-haired lady spotted at the SOTU is, indeed, 79-year-old representative Rosa DeLauro.

Serving in Congress for more than three decades, DeLauro represents Connecticut’s 3rd congressional district, which stretches from Long Island Sound and New Haven to Naugatuck Valley and Waterbury.

Rosa earned degrees from Marymount College and Columbia University before pursuing the role of the first executive director of US political action committee EMILY’s List. By 1990, she had been elected to the House of Representatives.

The congresswoman serves as chair of the House Appropriations Committee and sits on the Democratic Steering And Policy Committee.

Outside her work, Rosa is a wife, mother and grandmother. She is married to Stanley Greenberg and the couple have three children: Anna, Kathryn and Jonathan Greenberg. She also has six grandchildren.

Why the congresswoman dyes her hair purple

Rosa DeLauro is notable for her daring hair colour and there’s a reason behind it – it’s all down to self-expression.

Talking to CTPost, DeLauro addressed her purple hair, which she has had for more than a decade, saying: “I wanted to do it – I love it and it’s fun. You are who you are. It’s your personality. I’m always of the point of view you have to be who you are.”

The 79-year-old revealed others often praise her hair colour. “Bubby, I love the purple, I love the purple,” she once said, quoting her granddaughter.

As well as being a great way for Rosa to express her personality, she has also been known to sport the colour purple to raise awareness of various causes. In 2018, the congresswoman tweeted a photo of her wearing an all-purple outfit (including hair) to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

DeLauro captioned it: “I am wearing purple for #WPCD. Pancreatic cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in CT and on track to be the same nationwide. I am proud to raise awareness and fight for life-saving @NIH research, which could unlock the cure to this disease.”
