Stack Overflow's April Fool's joke has us crying with laughter and pain

Yasmine Leung April 1, 2022

Stack Overflow is both hilarious and painful today thanks to their April Fool’s filters. Half of the users are finding it hilarious, while others aren’t in the mood for the head-spinning prank, so here’s how you turn it off.

We love a good harmless joke, but Stack Overflow is really messing with its users this year. The platform is the go-to site for anyone with coding questions, so the last thing people want is more stress.

However, the site clearly hasn’t considered that because their prank has users raging on Twitter.

Developers’ eyes are watering from laughter…and pain

For April Fool’s Day 2022, Stack Overflow is having a little fun with its UI. With eight different filters, you can make the page look like Facebook – or as they’ve called it, Bookface; Windows 3.1’s infamous colour scheme, Hot Dog Stand or Lisa Frank-inspired colours, titled Frisa Lank.

Stack Overflow can also take you back to a childhood fav with their Mario filter – enter the Maxtrix with Terminal, or make you feel like an FBI agent with their Top Secret setting.

There’s also a filter for the good ol’ Windows 3.1 system, and the most unpleasant of them all, the 3D glasses theme, which probably had every user fuming when they accessed the site.

We’re a fan of all of them, except 3D glasses; we can’t bear to look at it for more than ten seconds.

We feel bad for this guy:

How to turn off Stack Overflow’s April Fool’s filters

At the bottom of the screen, you should see a bar with nine circular logos to represent the filter options. Simply select the first one to change the page back to default.

If you can’t see the bar already open on the screen, click on the “FILTERS” button on the bottom-right side of the page to expand the bar and click on the default setting to return it back to normal.

Happy April Fools!
