Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe it by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding gatherings with families or taking part in local parades – here are some “out of office” message examples to let your customers and clients know what how you’ll be observing it on Monday.

Why you might benefit from letting your customers and clients know you’re out of the office for Memorial Day

For 51 years now, Memorial Day has been an official federal holiday in the US. 

On the first Decoration Day – as it was originally known – general James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery. 5,000 volunteers decorated the graves of the 20,000 Civil War soldiers buried there, hence the name.

Whether you’re paying a visit to the grave of a family member, or participating in a commemorative event in your local community, there’s a chance you’ll be out of the office this Memorial Day, and will therefore benefit from the following message templates and examples.

You might choose to post something on your personal or company website. Alternatively, you could set up an email auto-response so that anyone contacting you knows you’re out of the office.

Memorial Day ‘out of office’ message examples for 2022

Most start with “Thank you for your email”. They then continue with varying degrees of friendliness and formality.

1:

I am out of the office with minimal access to email until Tuesday, June 1. If you need immediate assistance, please contact my colleague [insert name and email address and/or phone number].

“Please note that our offices are closed in observance of Memorial Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, June 1. Thank you for your email, and happy Memorial Day. I will have limited access to my emails and will get back to you when I return.”

Thank you for contacting me via email. I’m currently out of the office because it’s Memorial Day weekend. I’ll be back on Tuesday, June 1. Please call +ABC-DEF-GHIJ if you have an urgent question. When I return, I will answer your email.

They’re simple, and more generic than the above examples. However, you might prefer the convenience of using the same general message template for all federal (and personal!) holidays. It’s also worth noting that some styles of message will suit the size and style of your business; some won’t.

Happy holidays and thanks for your email! I’m taking a few days off. … I won’t be answering emails as quickly as usual. You can expect to hear back from me by [insert date].

Hi [specify name field ID],

Happy holidays! I am currently out of the office, with no email access. I’ll be returning on [insert date] and will get back to you as soon as I can.

Please note: [insert date] are company holidays for many of our employees. Because of this, there will likely be a delay in reply to your ticket, possibly until [insert return date] when most of our team returns.

Key pieces of information to include in your auto-reply message are: your reason for taking time off (in the present case, Memorial Day); how to get hold of you in an emergency (if applicable), for example by phone; an alternate contact name and detail; when you’ll be back in the office.

At the same time, you might want to isolate one or two pieces of information. Here’s an example that does that.

Just make sure it’s courteous
