Who was Mckenna Vierra?
McKenna Naheana Vierra was a Hawaii resident and flight attendant with Hawaiian Airlines.
Vierra, along with 23-year-old Dakota Bauder of Anchorage, passed away after a plane crash in Alaska on Monday, 26 July.
The GoFundMe campaign set up by Vierra’s uncle said that she had been working toward becoming a pilot.
In a statement, Robin Sparling, vice president of in-flight services at Hawaiian Airlines, said McKenna worked as a flight attendant with the airline since November 2016.
He said: “Whether it was in the cockpit or in the cabin, McKenna’s heart was in the sky. We will remember her beautiful smile, amazing personality and steadfast faith.”
Along with working as a flight attendant and being a flight enthusiast, Vierra had been recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in the body’s immune system. However, she fought the disease and through chemotherapy, became cancer-free.
“Our hearts are with McKenna’s family during this sad and difficult time,” Sparling added.
The tragic plane crash in Alaska
McKenna Vierra and Dakota Bauder died in a Cessna plane crash in Alaska on Monday, 26 July, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, State Troopers.
The Anchorage Daily News reported Bauder was a flight instructor at the Angel Aviation Flight School who was doing a discovery flight with Vierra, a prospective student, at the time of the crash.
The plane crashed in the southeast end of Eagle River Valley likely between 11 am and 1 am on Monday, 26 July, said Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board Alaska office chief.
Officials were notified of the overdue flight around 8 pm and by 10:45 pm, a good Samaritan searcher in a plane located the wreckage, troopers said.
It is still unclear what may have caused the crash.
