Elon Musk has voted Republican for the first time ever by casting a ballot for Mayra Flores – what do we know about her age, family life and career to date? And how did Elon come to vote in the state of Texas?

Meet Mayra Flores: Age and career of Elon Musk’s pick for Texas’ 34th district

Mayra Flores is now the Republican Party representative for Texas’ 34th congressional district.

She was born and raised in Burgos Tamaulipas, Mexico, and came to the US as a six-year-old.

From a young age, per her campaign website bio, Mayra Flores’ family surrounded her with “strong conservative values”; she grew up “always putting God and family first”. Born in the mid-1980s, she is now in her mid to late 30s.

Flores spent a portion of her early life in the Rio Grande Valley and graduated high school in San Benito, Texas in 2004.

According to her profile on Ballotpedia, she earned her bachelor’s degree from South Texas College in 2019, but before that, in 2014, she was able “with the support of her family” to graduate as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.

Her political priorities include immigration, border security, lowering healthcare costs and taxes, and reducing government.

Earning Musk’s vote was the ‘icing on the cake’ for Flores

Mayra Flores tweeted this morning “still feeling surreal” from “everything that’s happened” during the past 24 hours.

“Earning Elon Musk’s vote was just the icing on the cake”, she wrote, “and I can’t wait to work with his team!”

The South Texas congressional candidate turned her district red for the first time, beating Democrat rival Dan Sanchez in a 51%-43% vote, The Guardian reports.

She is reportedly the first Latina Republican to serve Texas in congress. But the “special” election was only for the remainder of Democrat Filemon Vela’s term. He resigned on 31 March 2022. This means Flores will have to face “a more challenging race in November”.

Can Elon Musk vote in Texas?

Evidently yes. CNBC reported in December 2020 that the mercurial billionaire had confirmed his personal relocation to the state.

“For myself,” he said, “yes I have moved to Texas.”

A year later, Forbes added that, while Musk previously tweeted that his primary home “is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX”, the Wall Street Journal claimed that he had actually been living in a nearby mansion owned by a friend.

Either way, however, he lives and votes in Texas.
