How much does it cost to get Lego's Vincent van Gogh Starry Night kit?

The Vincent van Gogh Starry Night Lego set is due for release on 25 May 2022 for Lego VIP members and MoMA members – but at what cost? And when will it go on sale to the general public?

How much will the Lego Vincent van Gogh Starry Night kit cost?

Billed as a “unique building experience”, Lego fans can now – or rather, soon – capture Vincent van Gogh’s brushstrokes in bricks by putting together The Starry Night kit.

It contains one mini-figure – Van Gogh himself – and is recommended for people aged 18 and over.

The original 1889 painting of The Starry Night by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is now housed in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City and has an estimated value of $100 million or more – you can build it out of Lego bricks for a decidedly more modest price.

The kit costs $169.99 and will become available to the general public on 1 June 2022. However, according to CNET, members of the Lego VIP club, or MoMA, will be able to purchase the kit a week earlier, from 25 May.

How many pieces are there in the Lego Vincent van Gogh kit?

This particular Vincent van Gogh Lego kit – there may be more in the wings – consists of 2,316 individual pieces.

It’s item number 21,333 in the Lego catalogue, and buying it rewards the purchaser with 1,105 VIP points.

Once assembled, the picture is 15in (38cm) wide, 12in (28cm) tall, and 5in (12cm) deep. It gets its depth from the protruding, adjustable platform on which mini-Vincent stands, painting the painting. The kit also comes with a hook so you can hang the finished “painting” on your wall.

Fan designer Truman Cheng submitted the idea to the Lego Ideas callout. His suggestion received “more than 10,000 votes from the Lego Ideas community”.

How does its price compare with other luxury Lego kits?

The Lego Vincent van Gogh kit’s price point may be out of many people’s price range, but it’s far from the company’s most expensive offering.

Other high-end Lego kits include The Globe ($199.99), which consists of 2,585 pieces and stands at 16in (40cm); the house from Home Alone ($249.99), which has a whopping 3,955 pieces, including five mini-figures; and Tree House ($199.99), which comes with green and orange-yellow leaves so you can change them partway through the year.

Alternatives for the politically minded and anyone into motorsport also exist. No, really. You can get Lego figures of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy or a Lego Mclaren F1 car. But be warned: the latter is about the same price as the Van Gogh Lego kit.
