Meaning of 'justice for j6' explained as rally rumours loom in Washington DC

A rally under the slogan “Justice for J6” is reportedly scheduled for this Saturday, 18 September 2021 in Washington DC. Let’s take a look at the meaning of “Justice for J6”, the reasons behind this event and what authorities currently have in place to keep protesters under control.

‘Justice for J6’ meaning explored

The phrase “Justice for J6” refers to the US Capitol siege of 6 January 2021, which interrupted confirmation of the Electoral College win by President Joe Biden. During the event, five people died, including police officer Brian Sicknick, who was defending the Capitol building from rioters.

Officer Sicknick was 42 years old and, as per the BBC, on returning to his office during the 6 January attacks collapsed and passed away from his injuries the following day in hospital.

In total, more than 150 police officers were injured and more than 570 people were arrested for their involvement in the protest during months following the attack.

Jacob Anthony Chansley, who calls himself the QAnon Shaman, was one of the people taken into custody on charges including violent entry and disorderly conduct as per the BBC‘s report.

Former US President Donald Trump was impeached after being accused of inciting the 6 January Capitol riot, but he was acquitted following a Senate trial.

Now, Trump supporters are seeking “Justice for J6” and it appears a rally is planned for 18 September 2021 with people demanding “justice” for those charged for their involvement in the 6 January attack.

The ‘Justice for J6’ rally explored

As reported by The Washington Newsday, “Justice For J6” is a right-wing demonstration scheduled for noon on Saturday in Washington DC to celebrate the rioters who attacked the Capitol building on Jan 6.”

As per CNN, the event, organised by former Trump campaign official Matt Braynard, is set to have an expected turnout of 700 people. Speaking to CNN, Matt said: “The vast majority of the nearly 600 people arrested have not been charged with any violence.”

CNN reporter Jessica Schneider accused Braynard of making a statement that was “peddling misinformation”.

Police take security measures ahead of rumoured 18 September protest

The Justice for J6 rally is expected to see about 700 protesters gather at the Capitol building in Washington DC.

However, according to ABC7 Chicago, the authorities are prepared for the rally: “In front of the Capitol now is special video technology to keep an eye out for people with weapons arriving early to stir up trouble. The fencing that was up after the January 6 insurrection was taken down, but will be back this week.”

Speaking on MSNBC News on 10 September 2021, Glenn Kirschner, the channel’s legal analyst, said: “This protest will probably fizzle. But, if it doesn’t, what I’m confident of is Joe Biden’s administration will make sure the Capitol is protected.”
