European Parliament president David Sassoli has died aged 65. News of his passing was announced by Sassoli’s spokesman Roberto Cuillo, who confirmed the news in a statement on Twitter today (Tuesday, 11 January).
In the statement, Cuillo announced Sassoli had died in the early hours of Tuesday. The news comes after Cuillo reported on Monday that Sassoli had been hospitalised since 26 December following “a serious complication due to a disfunction of the immune system”.

Who is David Sassoli’s wife?
David Sassoli preferred to keep his family life separate to his political career, although we know he was married to Alessandra Vittorini with whom he shared children Giulio and Livia.
Alessandra is an architect who, as per Politico, is director of the School of Cultural Heritage And Activities Foundation.
Before taking up her current position, she was superintendent of fine arts and landscape archaeology for L’Aquila and Cratere.
