Meet the all-star Michigan coach
Bo Schemblecher was born on 1 April 1929 in Barberton, Ohio, and died at the age of 77 due to heart complications.
His real name was Glenn, but has long been nicknamed Bo after his sister’s failed attempt to say ‘brother’ when she was a child.
Schembechler was the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines from 1969-1989, coaching them for 21 seasons. While his team did not win a national championship, they did win 13 Big Ten Conference titles.
During his impressive career he also coached at Miami University from 1963-1968. He was also awarded the Big Ten Coach of the Year award four times.
His love for the game was nurtured when he played as a tackle at Miami University. However, coaching was to be his life’s calling.

Bo Schembechler has hit the headlines today after allegations were made by his son, Matt Schembechler, against the former team doctor for the University of Michigan, Dr Robert Anderson.
Matt Schembechler has also accused his father of not doing enough to safeguard him against Anderson.
Who is Bo Schembechler’s late wife Millie Schembechler?
Millie Schembechler, formerly Mildred L Williams, married Bo Schembechler in 1968.
At this time she already had three sons from a previous relationship. Bo Schembechler adopted Geoffrey, Matthew and Donald, also known as Chip, when they got married. Sadly, her son Chip died in a car accident in 2003.

Bo and Millie also had one son together, Glen III, affectionately nicknamed Shemy.
Millie was part of a close knit family and had three brothers, J.C, Jack and Jimmy Dale Williams, as well as two sisters named Pat and Doris.
She was a former nurse, and then became a full-time mom and part of the Michigan University community. Before marrying Bo she was part of the St. Louis Pinchhitters Association who worked to help disabled children.
Millie unfortunately died on 19 August 1992 at the age of 63 after being diagnosed with a rare form of adrenal cancer just eight months before.

She was heavily involved in the University of Michigan while her husband was head coach of the Michigan Wolverines.
The president of the university at the time of her death said:
“Millie Schembechler has been and will continue to be in memory, an important part of The University of Michigan. In many ways—her great courage, her warmth, her concern for others, her strong sense of community involvement, and her quiet strength—she embodied the best of the Michigan spirit.”
