Tensions in the US have escalated in the wake of the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on 24 May 2022 and Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke confronted Texas governor Greg Abbott over the massacre that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

As a passionate advocate of gun reform O’Rourke’s comments came as no surprise, but does his passion stem from having a family and children of his own?

Does Beto O’Rourke have children?

Beto O’Rourke is a known family man. His family have always supported him through his campaigns, appearing at events alongside the politician.

O’Rourke and his wife, Amy Hoover Sanders, have three children – Ulysses, 15, Molly, 14, and Henry, 11. Ulysses was named after one of the couple’s favourite books, Homer’s The Odyssey, as reported in a Town & Country profile in 2018:

The family live in El Paso, Texas, where Beto O’Rourke grew up.

Getting to know Beto and his wife Amy

Beto O’Rourke and Amy Hoover Sanders have been married for more than 15 years. The couple wed just ten months after they met on a blind date. The couple spent their first date at the Kentucky Club in Juarez, Mexico, which is where the margarita is thought to have been invented.

Amy Sanders O’Rourke took over her husband’s company, Stanton Street Technology Group, when he ran for Congress. In 2017, she sold her state in the company as Beto O’Rourke ran for Senate. Beto O’Rourke founded the company in the 1990s.

According to the Texas Monthly, Amy is nine years Beto O’Rourke’s junior. This means she would be around 40 years old as of 2022.

About O’Rourke’s Texas upbringing

Beto O’Rourke isn’t the first in his family to venture into politics. His father, Patrick “Pat” Francis O’Rourke, served as a county commissioner and county judge in El Paso, Texas. He was later elected as a Democrat but was unsuccessful in his bid to reclaim the county judge spot from a Republican.

His mother, Melissa, operated three furniture stores in El Paso. The family have been based in El Paso, Texas, for decades.

Beto O’Rourke was born on 26 September 1972. He is the only child of Pat and Melissa O’Rourke.
