At-large Boston City Council member Annissa Essaibi George announced on 27 January she would run in the 2021 Boston mayoral election. The Boston Globe reported two weeks ago her husband has had “problems with City Hall”. So, who is Annissa Essaibi George’s husband? Meet real estate developer Doug George.

Who is Annissa Essaibi George?

Annissa Essaibi George entered the 2021 Boston mayoral race in January this year. 

Since 23 March previous Boston mayor, Marty Walsh, has been United States Secretary of Labour under president Joe Biden.

As such, competition for the next mayor of Boston is likely to be fierce. Essaibi George is one of a diverse array of candidates. The first two to throw their hats in the ring were fellow councillor at-large Michelle Wu and District 4 councillor Andrea Campbell.

Where is her family from?

Per her campaign bio, Essaibi George is a mother of four, a former Boston Public Schools teacher (for 13 years), and a daughter of immigrants. 

Her Tunisian father, Ezzeddine, arrived in the US in 1972. Barbara, her mother, was born in a displaced persons’ camp in Germany to Polish parents. She arrived in the US in the early 1950s.

Essaibi George was raised by her maternal grandparents in Dorchester, along with her brother and two sisters.

Who is Anissa Essaibi George’s husband?

Anissa and her husband, Doug George, have four children, all boys: Douglas, age 16, and triplets, Charlie, Kayden and Samir, age 15.

Douglas George (Sr) is a licensed housing and real estate developer based in Boston. He currently has four development projects in progress, according to Bldup

In December 2018, he bought the three-storey Dot Tavern with plans to revive the “vintage watering hole”. A month earlier, Boston Business Journal reported on his proposal to build 120 residences near Southie’s Washington Village site in South Boston.

Doug George has been in property development for 25 years

Two years earlier, the Boston Herald reported George had pitched plans for two six-storey residential buildings, comprising 40 units, at a cost of $12.5m, on an industrial section of Massachusetts Avenue in Dorchester.

“It’s an exciting area,” George said at the time. He had by that time already been building properties in the area for 20 years. 

“There’s a lot happening in the Mass. Ave. area. I think it’s a good project that will help activate that part of Mass. Ave.”
