Amber Heard has begun testifying as a witness in the ongoing defamation case former husband Johnny Depp has brought against her. After her first afternoon of testimony, some of those watching online have started tweeting claims Amber Heard is quoting movies and TV shows – specifically a monologue from The Talented Mr Ripley and lines from White Chicks, Maid, Mildred Pearce, and others. What are people saying exactly?

Amber Heard’s testimony quotes The Talented Mr Ripley and other movies, Twitter users claim

A popular Twitter thread by actress Christina Pykles makes various claims about Amber Heard’s first few hours of testimony.

Pykles has collected the tweets of several others to form a sort of thesis – although it may be tongue in cheek. Her idea, she writes, is Amber Heard has been using quotes from films, TV shows and books in her description of events between Johnny Depp and herself.

The films/TV shows/books people claim to have identified in Ms Heard’s testimony include The Talented Mr Ripley, White Chicks, Notting Hill, Reservoir Dogs, Mildred Pearce, I Am A Killer, Alpha Dog, Maid and Zombieland.

But already people are questioning Twitter’s reaction to Amber Heard’s testimony

Some of the scenes people say they recognise in Heard’s testimony are as simple as stubbing a toe on a door or throwing a glass and punching a wall. Obviously, these are not things so unusual they must have been taken from films and TV shows.

Also, requests for links and timestamps to verify the claims have been left unanswered. In other words, no one has produced clips of Amber Heard quoting, for example, Marge Sherwood’s monologue in The Talented Mr Ripley as evidence.

For what it’s worth, however, the lines in question are: “The thing with Dickie… it’s like the sun shines on you, and it’s glorious. And then he forgets you and it’s very, very cold.”

And: “When you have his attention, you feel like you’re the only person in the world, that’s why everybody loves him so much.”

Without anything to back them up, therefore, tweets that simply repeat plot points from comedy movies are best taken as jokes – or expansions on an ongoing joke – rather than serious claims.

NBC is publishing live updates on its website during day two of her testimony.

Johnny Depp’s defamation lawsuit against former wife Amber Heard – regarding a 2018 essay she wrote for The Washington Post – began on 11 April 2022. Amber is countersuing Johnny.

They were married from 2015 to 2017, but had been together since 2012. Depp and his attorneys rested their case after 13 days of deliberations; Amber Heard’s testimony began yesterday (Wednesday, 4 May 2022).
