Is Ben McDermott related to Craig McDermott? We take a look at the Hobart Hurricanes cricketer’s background and career so far.
McDermott is a hard-hitting wicket-keeper batsman who has been impressing in his role at the top of the order in this year’s Big Bash.
The 26-year-old is currently the leading run-scorer in the competition, with 299 from his first seven matches.
He has a top score of 91 from 58 balls against the Melbourne Stars, is striking at nearly 140 and averaging a shade under 50.
It’s an excellent return so far from a player of real pedigree.
Is Ben McDermott related to Craig McDermott?
Craig McDermott, the former international fast bowler, is Ben’s father.
The now 55-year-old was an elite level performer who struck fear into opposition batsmen and he has served as the Aussie bowling coach on multiple occasions.
Ben also has a very talented brother, Alister, who has played in the Sheffield Shield and the Big Bash.
He is also a seam bowler, who represented Queensland in red-ball cricket and both Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder in the shortest format of the game.
However, the 29-year-old hasn’t played a senior state or franchise match since January 2015.
The three McDermott’s have plenty of cricketing experience between them but it’s Ben who is having his time in the sun right now.
He’s entering what should be the prime of his career and after getting a taste for international action with Australia A against India in December and scoring an unbeaten century in the second innings, he’ll have his sights set on a senior Australia debut in the near future.
