His family and tragedy around his mother
On 17 June 2020, Lawrence was included in England’s 30-man squad to start training for the Test series against the West Indies.
Later, he was named as one of the nine reserve players for the first Test match of the series.
However, he was forced to leave the England bio-secure bubble after his mother sadly died.
He told BBC Sport: “Mum had been ill for a couple of years so as sad as it was, I had mentally prepared myself for the worst happening.
“That made things quite tough for a couple of months, then it was lovely to go back and play some cricket for Essex around my really good mates, who I needed at that time. They were all fantastic.”
Lawrence grew up on a cricket ground. He lived in the accommodation that came with his dad Mark’s job as a groundsman at Chingford.
His brother, Tom, is three years younger than Dan and is training as a professional wrestler. He trains at Lucha Britannia in Bethnal Green under the name ‘David Wreckham’.
